No Russian Law
In May 2024, Georgia has witnessed large-scale protests against a controversial “foreign agents” bill. This legislation mandates that organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from foreign sources must register as agents of foreign influence. Critics argue that the bill mirrors Russian laws designed to suppress dissent and represents a shift towards authoritarianism and stronger ties with Russia.
Protests have erupted in Tbilisi, particularly around Heroes’ Square and the parliament building, where thousands of demonstrators have gathered, chanting slogans like “no to the Russian law” and calling for a European future for Georgia. These demonstrations, while largely peaceful, have seen instances of violence, with police using tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowds.
